COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – An investigation is underway into how a handcuffed suspect was able to conceal a pistol and fatally shoot himself in the back of an El Paso County deputy’s squad car.

It happened on Powers near Fountain Blvd Tuesday afternoon.

The unidentified 33-year-old suspect was being taken to jail when he pulled out a gun and held it to his head. A deputy fled and called for back-up. A standoff lasted almost 5 hours.

Authorities used a robot to deliver a phone to the vehicle, so they could try to talk him into dropping the weapon. Eventually, the man took his own life.

Sheriff Bill Elder says the deputy involved will not be placed on leave.
