COLORADO – It’s tax season and a new phishing email scam is making the rounds.
The National Cybersecurity Center based in Colorado Springs is warning folks about what they call “spearfishing attacks” targeting company employees to give out private information thru the transmission of W-2 tax forms.
In those emails they’re attempting to persuade the receiver to give out their personal information including a social security number and banking information.
They appear to be coming from someone in a position of trust like an employer, family member, or friend. T
The IRS says they’ve seen a 400-percent increase in these “spearfishing” cases so far this tax season.
