Overnight closure of I-25 near Larkspur for bridge work

By Nia Bender

DOUGLAS COUNTY – Be prepared for possible delays through the I-25 GAP Project overnight Monday night. A small segment of southbound I-25 is being closed for girder work on the Upper Lake Gulch Bridge. The closure, between Spruce Mountain Road (Exit 173) and Upper Lake Gulch Road (Exit 172), is taking place from 8 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. Additional closures include the northbound I-25 ramps at Upper Lake Gulch Road, the southbound I-25 off-ramp at Upper Lake Gulch Road, and the Upper Lake Gulch Road underpass.

DETOURS: Southbound I-25 traffic will funnel into one lane just north of Spruce Mountain Road, where traffic will exit. Motorists then take Spruce Mountain Road and Upper Lake Gulch Road to the southbound I-25 on-ramp.

For access to Larkspur from northbound I-25, continue north on I-25, exit at the Sky View Lane/Tomah Road exit (Exit 174) and use the southbound I-25 off-ramp to Spruce Mountain Road.

A local detour is in place to access Lake Gulch Road.

The GAP Project covers 18-miles of highway between Monument and Castle Rock. Crews are working to widen the interstate from two lanes to three, though that extra new lane will be an express lane only. The Express Lanes in both directions will be free to vehicles with three or more people and motorcycles. The other two lanes remain free of charge.

The $419 million project also includes shoulder widening, bridge reconstruction, new wildlife crossings, resurfacing with new pavement, and modernizing technology. The GAP Project is expected to be completed sometime next year.
