Karrar Al Khammasi sentenced to 45 years

EL PASO COUNTY — On Thursday, an El Paso County Judge sentenced Karrar Al Khammasi, the man convicted of shooting Colorado Springs Police Officer Cem Duzel in 2018, to 45 years in prison. In June an El Paso County Jury found Al Khammasi guilty on multiple counts, including criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree. Officer Duzel was responding to reports of gunfire near the Olympic Training Center when he was shot in the head. The Colorado Springs community followed Officer Duzel’s road to recovery showing an outpouring of support.  In 2019, he was able to meet one of his favorite celebrities, John Cena, and received a Purple Heart for his actions of bravery.
