Martin Drake Power Plant Decommissioned

Today, the Martin Drake Power Plant stops operating. The coal-powered plant is being decommissioned as part of a plan from Colorado Springs Utilities focused on renewable energy. A year ago, the plant stopped burning coal and switched to using two generating units running on natural gas. As the city transitions away from the plant, energy will be purchased from other sources at a fixed rate. A contractor will be selected to remove the plant’s equipment, which could take about three years. The plant’s been providing energy to the Springs for nearly a century.
