Springs Parents Found Guilty in Child Death

KIRA VILLALABA AND JOENNY ASTACIO / CSPD

Two parents from Colorado Springs have been found guilty in the death of their child. Kira Villalba and Joenny Astacio were found guilty of child abuse by knowingly or recklessly causing the death of a child. Court records show that the child, Cairo, was only 15 months old. Springs Police opened an investigation into the child’s death shortly after Cairo passed. Eventually, authorities determined that child died of a fentanyl overdose in the home. Investigators believe that both parents were using fentanyl at the time the child died. Arrest papers say police found drug paraphernalia in the couple’s home. They will be sentenced in May. Both parents are connected to a separate trial where they are accused of providing a teenager with fentanyl. That trial is expected to start in July.
