It’s Not How You Start…….
Right? You know that old saying ”Its not how you start, it’s how you finish?” Does that phrase, and will that phrase apply to the Air Force Football team? It did one year ago when they won their last 4 games and finished at 5-7. The ending to this year’s season has yet to be written and could go either way. The Falcons are still in the hunt to become bowl eligible, and I promise you the fellas who are seniors (and everyone else) would love nothing better to play a 13th game this year. Now, the Falcons put themselves in this position of having to win their last 3, after, ironically enough, losing 3 games by 3 points each. One thing, or several things you can already say about this team-they are very young on defense but getting better, Quarterback Liam Szarka has every defensive coordinator left on the schedule working late at night, and………will the 3rd thing be, “And they won their last 4 games to secure a bowl berth?.” That’s the big question. The defense has played better the last several weeks and the offense is getting behind its fullback game. Will that be enough Saturday? UCONN has a high powered offense and has not been slowed all season. When your Quarterback Joe Fagnano has thrown 25 touchdown passes without an interception, and when your offense has turned it over JUST ONCE THIS YEAR, that a big challenge. Their defense has studs, but it has holes as well. Rice ran for 300 yards and passed for more than 150 against the Huskies earlier this year. So you may see a high scoring affair Saturday. UCONN is the toughest game remaining on the schedule for Air Force (no disrespect to New Mexico-another good team.) Get by the Huskies and you have your final home game against a much improved New Mexico team that is going bowling, and it’s senior day. Then a road trip to Colorado State, where I’m sure the Falcons would love to send the Rams meekly into the PAC-12 with another loss. So its three one game seasons for Air Force, with Saturday being win and stay alive, or lose, and close out the season. Fans don’t remember how you start. They do remember how you finish.
Air Force at UCONN Saturday Morning at 10, on 740 KVOR.
