The Air Force Academy recently provided an update on the ongoing efforts to restore the Cadet Chapel, which has been closed since 2020 for the removal of asbestos and restoration of the structure. Concerns were raised earlier this year by the academy’s Board of Visitors and the late Charlie Kirk, a member of the panel, on the slow progress being made. The chapel was built in 1962. Air force Secretary Troy Mink outlined several areas to hopefully speed up the rebuild, which include resolving slowdowns in a more timely manner and speeding up contracting and funding requests. The report says many of the slowdowns have been attributed to finding and clearing more asbestos than contractors expected and working through a tedious task of what’s called original alignment deficiencies. The refurbishing also includes replacing more than 24 thousand pieces of original stained glass.
