Our news partners KKTV 11 News has acquired a report by the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control on the Aspen Acres fire and how it started. The report says the fire began early on the morning of June 29th after an aspen tree fell on a power line just west of Highway 165 close to mile marker 17 in Custer County. There were high winds the morning of the fire. The report includes a picture of that aspen tree showing burn marks where it was resting on those power lines, and accounts of witnesses who saw the start of that blaze. KKTV 11 News acquired the report from an attorney who is representing victims of the fire suing San Isabel Electric, the owners of the power lines. More than 200 homes in 4 counties were destroyed by the fire, which continues to burn in rugged terrain and is 82% contained.
