A man was finally taken into custody early Wednesday evening following an hours-long standoff with authorities in Custer County 10 miles northeast of Westcliffe. The Sheriff’s department responded to a call of an abandoned vehicle. Reports indicate responding officers came under fire from a man in a nearby home. Additional resources from the Colorado State Patrol and the Chafee County Sheriff’s department were called in. The gunman had barricaded himself inside a two-story home and continued to shoot at law enforcement. Authorities eventually took 49 year old James Adams into custody. Authorities say Adams fired more than 100 shots at law enforcement. His motives remain unknown.
