Colorado Springs Police say one of its bomb-sniffing dogs was euthanized after it leapt from the top story of a parking structure during a training exercise.

Lieutenant Catherine Buckley says the dog named Petra fell from the fourth story of the police headquarters parking garage during an exercise with the Regional Explosives Unit Monday afternoon. The dog suffered serious injuries to her back and was put down at an emergency veterinary clinic. Buckley says it's unclear why Petra leapt from the structure.

The dog had been with the police department for more than a year and is the first Colorado Springs Police K9 to die in the line of duty.
