Jury selection is underway for 19-year-old Mayco January. He’s accused of murdering a Springs couple who caught him burglarizing their home near Circle and Airport in 2013.
January was 17 when he allegedly shot Fort Carson Sergeant David Dunlap in the back after he responded to a burglar alarm. Dunlap’s pregnant wife, Whitney Butler, was shot in the back of the head while kneeling over her husband’s body.
January is being tried as an adult. If convicted, he faces life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years.
January has also been linked to several other crimes, including a series of break-ins in which a 71-year-old woman was beaten and robbed insider her home twice in four months, and another in which a 15-year-old girl was assaulted by a burglar.
