Tularemia, or ‘Rabbit Fever’, has been confirmed in El Paso County.
A wild rabbit in northeast Colorado Springs died of Tularemia infection, and health officials are asking residents to remain cautious around wild animals.
Several dead rabbits were found in the Park Vista subdivision, near Austin Bluffs and Stetson Hills. The disease was also confirmed in rabbits near Yoder, in eastern El Paso County, in late August. No human cases have been reported.
The bacterial infection can be transmitted to humans by the handling of sick or dead animals, or from the bite of infected insects. Tularemia can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
