COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Soaking rains loosened several one-ton concrete blocks from a large retaining wall on the west side of Colorado Springs, sending them tumbling towards homes below Tuesday.

Several families have been evacuated, with no estimation on when they’ll be allowed to return home because of what the city calls a bad construction job by one of their neighbors on 26th Street.

Homeowner Stephen Hennings got a permit to build a 20 foot retaining wall about a year ago, but the wall was built 16 feet higher that what was approved.

Hennings has been ordered to fix the wall. It will be up to the city’s legal team to determine what financial responsibility Hennings will have when it comes to any damage the collapse has caused.
