COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – An investigation is underway into how a handcuffed suspect was able to conceal a pistol and fatally shoot himself in the back of an El Paso County deputy’s squad car.
It happened on Powers near Fountain Blvd Tuesday afternoon.
The unidentified 33-year-old suspect was being taken to jail when he pulled out a gun and held it to his head. A deputy fled and called for back-up. A standoff lasted almost 5 hours.
Authorities used a robot to deliver a phone to the vehicle, so they could try to talk him into dropping the weapon. Eventually, the man took his own life. Â
Sheriff Bill Elder says the deputy involved will not be placed on leave.
