UPDATE: Trinidad boy remains in critical condition after being shot in the head

UPDATE: A 9-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the head after he and his 8-year-old brother found and handled a loaded handgun while inside of a parked car. 

The victim is hospitalized in critical condition.

The boys were in the care of 63-year-old family friend, James Howard, while the boys’ parents attended a medical appointment.

No arrests have been made. a district attorney will determine what charges, if any, will be filed.


TRINIDAD, CO – Trinidad Police are investigating after a boy, around 8 years old, was shot in the head Monday.

The victim was found in a vehicle at a gas station. His two brothers, ages 5 and 12, were also in the vehicle. They were not hurt.  The boy was flown to a hospital in unknown condition.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has responded to the situation. No arrests have been made.
