CANON CITY, CO – A suspicious device that caused the evacuation of several homes in Canon City late Sunday night, turned out to be an old army tank round.
Two people fished the device out of the Arkansas River and brought it home. Some estimate the round had been stuck there for about 30 years.
It was collected by a Fort Carson explosives team, and was taken to a safe location for detonation. 19 homes were evacuated during the operation.
Military officials say if the shell had gone off, it could have caused significant damage to the neighborhood.
