PINEWOOD SPRINGS (KUSA) – Two young boys drowned Sunday in the Little Thompson River near Pinewood Springs, about eight miles west of Lyons in Larimer County.

Ten fire and rescue agencies responded to the area of Highway 36 near Kiowa Road just before 12:30 p.m. after receiving reports that two boys had fallen into the river. Both were found unresponsive in the water.

First responders attempted CPR, but both boys — brothers estimated to be 10 years old or younger — were pronounced dead. The boys’ identities have not yet been released, but they were from the Pinewood Springs area.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of these children,” said Bobby Moll with the Larimer County Sheriff’s office as he choked back tears. “Obviously today is Mother’s Day, and anytime a life is taken whether it’s a child or an adult it’s unfortunate but anytime a child passes away, accident, however, it’s an awful thing.”

The river is not quite in runoff stage but it is moving swiftly and the water is cold. Law enforcement said the brothers were playing in a backyard near the water.
