COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Three former leaders of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office made a brief court appearance Thursday morning.  Terry Maketa, Paula Presley, and John San Augustin were formally advised of the charges against them.

The three high-profile defendants were treated the same as the others being advised Thursday.

Former Sheriff Maketa and former Undersheriff Presley are both charged with eight felony and misdemeanor crimes including extortion, kidnapping, and official misconduct.

Former investigations chief John San Augustin is charged with two felonies; kidnapping and false imprisonment.

All three defendants sat with their attorneys at the defense table, rather than finding a seat in the gallery.  The judge called their cases first.  Each waived having their charges read aloud in court.  The judge then asked them individually whether they were aware of the conditions of their bond and their mandatory protection orders.  They all said they were.

The judge set the next court date for September.
