SECURITY, CO –Care & Share Food Bank is stepping in to help families in Security, who recently learned their tap water may have unsafe levels of man-made chemicals.
Since last week, people living in Security, Widefield and Fountain have been buying bottled water for drinking, cooking and even bathing. The EPA just lowered the advisory for PFC contaminants in ground water, putting those communities in the at-risk category. Health officials have only advised pregnant and breast-feeding women to avoid drinking the tap water.
Now Care & Share is helping with bottled water costs. “It’s a totally unexpected expense, and we’re certainly in a position where we can help, provide this temporary relief for these families so that they don’t have to worry and struggle right now,” says Shannon Brice.
So far, more than 2,000 people have signed a petition to try and get free bottled water from the government.
The food bank plans to hand out one to two cases of bottled water from their current warehouse stock and is working to get more. They will distribute a truckload of water this Friday, June 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church.
