Some communities on Colorado Springs’ west side might soon be required to secure their trash in bear-proof trash cans.
The city council agreed to move ahead on the wording of an ordinance to cut down on bear encounters by requiring homes in certain areas to use bear-proof trash cans.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports they received 480 bear calls this year.
If the ordinance goes through, residents in the affected areas would be required to get bear-proof containers, keep trash or perishable waste inside, and limit times when trash is put out.
City council hopes to vote on the measure in October.
