COLORADO SPRINGS – Officials believe the water temperature at Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs may be adding to issues for fish in the lake. Dozens of dead fish were found on the shores last weekend and it was thought that blue-green toxic algae may have been to blame. Prospect Lake was closed recently because of the algae, which is highly toxic.
A spokesperson for the city is saying the hot weather may be part of the cause. They believe a combination of warmer water temperatures and the toxic algae are responsible for killing the fish. Fish become stressed when the water temperatures exceed 70-degrees and we’ve seen numerous days with our highs in the 90’s.
Warmer water makes the fish more vulnerable to illnesses and death. While the city can’t do much about the heat, they have been treating the lake with environmentally friendly chemicals to deal with the algae blooms.
