Recreational weed in Colorado Springs goes up in smoke

COLORADO SPRINGS – Voters in Colorado Springs won’t be getting the opportunity to vote yay or nay on recreational marijuana sales in the city. City council members debated allowing the measure on the ballot for voters to decide in November.

The question didn’t gain enough support from council members during their informal work session on Monday. In order to make it on the ballot, it had to have support from five city council members, but that number wasn’t reached after the issue faced sharp criticism from Mayor John Suthers and others.

Opponents argued legalizing rec weed could possibly hurt the chances of the Springs becoming the next permanent home for U.S. Space Command.  Proponents said the millions of dollars in marijuana taxes could be used by the city to accomplish numerous projects and programs.
