Rescuing wild animals doesn’t end well

COLORADO SPRINGS – It’s one of several bad endings for wild animals rescued by well-meaning people. Last Friday, life sadly ended for an adorable Red Fox. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers confiscated the animal from a Colorado Springs woman who claimed she rescued the fox two years ago when it was a baby. CPW officials say they learned about it on Instagram, where the woman created a page for the animal back in 2018.

According to wildlife officials, they destroyed the fox because it had lived more than two years in captivity and it couldn’t survive if they returned it to the wild. CPW says not only is it illegal to possess wildlife in Colorado, but it’s also dangerous. Red fox can carry diseases like canine distemper and rabies.

If you happen to come across an animal in distress, leave it alone, especially if it’s a baby. Contact CPW if you believe it’s orphaned or abandoned and needs to be rescued. They’ll send an officer out to assess the situation and get it to a licensed rehab facility, if necessary.
