Voters in Pueblo won’t be deciding the fate of controversial statue

PUEBLO – Voters in Pueblo will not be deciding on the future of the Christopher Columbus statue on East Abriendo St. in November. After a lengthy City Council meeting on Monday night, members decided not to send the question to the ballot.

The council asked for anyone who was in favor of putting the issue on the ballot to speak up, but no one did so. When the council called for people against the issue, many people said the council was rushing the issue because the deadline to put anything on the November ballot is this Friday.

City leaders are now hoping mediation can lead to a solution, though that hasn’t been successful in past efforts. Numerous businesses say protesters near the statue are scaring people away from their businesses.
