Labor Day weekend could lead to long delays on the roads

By Nia Bender

COLORADO – The long Labor Weekend is considered by many as the last “hurrah” before summer ends. Not everyone agrees with that, but everyone can agree that traffic is going to awful in many areas at best.

(I-25 GAP PROJECT)

CDOT says they’re prepared for the influx of cars, trucks and trailers on Colorado’s roads. Construction is being halted on I-25 along the 18-mile long stretch of the GAP PROJECT between Colorado Springs and Castle Rock, Friday through Tuesday. Heavier traffic in the GAP generally means delays regardless, but at least construction won’t add to the misery.

(I-70 Denver)

Construction along the I-70 Corridor between Aurora and basically the Utah Border are also being stopped for the long holiday weekend. I-70 in Denver is under a massive construction project along a 10-mile long stretch between Chambers Rd. and Brighton Blvd. just east of I-25 (also known as “The Mousetrap).

(I-70 Mountain Corridor)

As far as the I-70 Mountain Corridor goes, it’s usually rough every weekend headed out of Denver to the west. Delays can be up to 90-minutes on some days in both directions between the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels and Morrison.  That won’t be your only struggle trying to head west. The Grizzly Creek Fire burning near Glenwood Springs has caused major issues for drivers. Part of the westbound lanes are rerouted onto the eastbound side of the highway, meaning slower speeds and one lane getting through in each direction. On top of that challenge, I-70 could close at a moment’s notice because of weather conditions. The slightest amount of rain could trigger rockslides or mudslides because the vegetation holding the soil and rocks in place burned during the early days of the fire last month.
