COLORADO SPRINGS – The Delta variant of the Coronavirus is pushing up the number of cases of the virus in El Paso County. We’ve seen 717-new cases in the last seven days, putting the rate at 99.2 cases per 100-thousand people. According to the El Paso County Public Health Department, the percentage of people testing positive has also risen to six percent.
The rate in the county is actually higher than any of the counties in the Denver Metro area. While the numbers are concerning, we’re still well below where we were last fall and winter. Roughly 55-percent of the county is now fully vaccinated and the Delta variant accounts for 90-percent of new cases statewide.
Starting Tuesday, the State of Colorado is reminding parents and guardians their children need a second Covid-19 vaccination. CDPHE is sending out text notifications to parents of children from 12 to 17-years old and they’ll be following up with emails on Thursday. The message is targeting kids who show up in the state’s vaccination database as being more than 40-days overdue for a second dose of vaccine.
