EL PASO COUNTY, CO – Once regarded a powerful El Paso County Republican, Sheriff Terry Maketa resigned at the end of 2014 in a swirl of controversy, and Thursday morning Maketa surrendered to Gilpin County authorities. Maketa posted a $10,000 bond.
Undersheriff Paula Presley turned herself in Wednesday, and former Commander Juan San Agustin Thursday posted bond at the Teller County jail.
The trio was indicted by a Grand Jury Wednesday. San Agustin faces two felony charges while Maketa and Presley face nine charges, six of them felonies.
Trouble started in mid-2014 when sheriff’s department supervisors accused Maketa of sexual improprieties with subordinates and treating them favorably. Following Wednesday’s indictments, new allegations of abuse of power, and reprisals against political rivals, have surfaced.
