EL PASO COUNTY, CO – More problems in the effort to decontaminate water in southern El Paso County.
A filter, to be used in Fountain, was found to have limited success in removing chemicals, like those found in a toxic firefighting foam used at Peterson Air Force Base.
The filters will have to be replaced more frequently than first planned.
That could lead to higher costs for water customers.
The chemicals are in the Widefield aquifer, which supplies Fountain, Security, and Widefield.
They’ve been linked to liver damage, low infant birth weight and cancer.
None of the area’s three largest districts still use untreated water from the aquifer.
