Red Flag Law Used in Denver, Days After Going Into Effect

A Denver police officer has petitioned a judge to take away the guns of a man who made suicidal statements to officers investigating a domestic violence call.

It’s believed to be the first use of the state’s new Red Flag Law, which allows police to ask for a court order to take someone’s personal firearms if they are considered a threat to themselves or others.

The judge will hold a hearing on the petition later this month.

The Denver Police Department is currently holding onto the guns, which the man gave them voluntarily during their investigation.
