COLORADO SPRINGS – If you were driving along Highway 94 near Curtis Rd. on December 22nd, you may have seen a disturbing sight. Dozens of dead cattle could be seen in a field just off the roadway. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was contacted and a veterinarian was called in to determine the cause of the animal’s deaths.

According to the Gazette, the animals died after ingesting high levels of nitrates. Nitrates are found in a lot of livestock feed and the elevated levels were found in at least one bale of hay eaten by the cattle. The owner says the animals had been eating the hay for about two weeks.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s doesn’t believe any criminal actions were taken.
