An El Paso County Deputy has made the ultimate sacrifice. Deputy Andrew Peery was killed after responding to a shooting in the 500 block of Ponderosa in Security last evening. Deputies say that when they arrived on scene, they were immediately met with gunfire. Authorities did return fire. The suspected shooter, identified as 33-year-old John Paz, was found dead hours later. It’s unclear how Paz died. Last night, a procession carrying Peery’s body passed in front of the EPSO. Fellow officers have noted Peery’s positive personality, and care for people. He left behind a wife and two children. Peery was a highly-decorated member of the SWAT team, according to Sheriff Bill Elder. Governor Jared Polis says his thoughts are with Peery’s family.
