Manitou Springs will receive 100 thousand dollars from the state to buy bear resistant trash receptacles, part of a one million dollar effort to help communities around the state deal with the bear population. 27 communities applied for more than 2 million dollars in grant money as part of an effort called Human-Bear Conflict Reduction. The grants are being rewarded by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. 17 communities will split 1 million dollars to fund full and partial plans to try and better control human and bear interactions. This year sightings around the state have soared, due in part to a dry summer and little food for the bears in the Colorado high country.
