Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced Tuesday the Defense Department will no longer appoint civilians to tenured faculty assignments at the Air Force Academy, Army and Naval Academy. In a memo Hegseth says tenured faculty results in complacency and the lack of new ideas. He says this change will allow those academies to return to the focus of war fighting. At the Air Force Academy the most recent numbers show 40% of the faculty is tenured civilians. Former Superintendent Tony Bauernfeind was trying to reduce that number. Opponents of the move say civilian faculty members bring a broad educational experience to cadets.
