UCONN
5 games are left in the regular season for the Air Force Falcons. Saturday’s game against UCONN will usher in a 3rd starting quarterback this year, either Senior Josh Johnson or Freshman Howard Fisher. Nobody saw this coming in August, and yet it’s the reality of the Falcons season right now. Whoever gets the majority of snaps Saturday and down the stretch will have a large role in the direction of the end of the regular season. A win Saturday and the Falcons are bowl eligible. Beat Army, and you bring home the Commander In Chiefs Trophy for only the second time in 9 years. Fail to do either one, and many would say the season would be a disappointment. Now, to be fair, you can’t lay all of that on one position. Every player will have a hand in how things turn out. Yet, Saturday, and the rest of the season will determine how a season, and/or players are remembered, and what could come in the years ahead. Senior Quarterback Josh Johnson had a rough game against Wyoming with 2 fumbles. He is a good passer with a strong arm and has played well in spots for the Falcons. His career rushing numbers are 165 yards on 48 carries for 1 touchdown. As he finishes his senior season he has a chance to help this team hit a lot of season goals. Freshman Quarterback Howard Fisher rushed for 38 yards against Wyoming. He has a lot of potential. Fisher is super quick and a speedster, the kind of athlete that’s perfect for the Air Force offense. But he is also young and may be asked to take the keys to the car even though he has not been behind the wheel that much. Who will seize the advantage beginning Saturday? Johnson could end his career on a high note. Fisher might be able to do enough to make it a crazy quarterback competition next year with Liam Szarka and Evan Medders. (Troy Calhoun said Medders might have a chance to come back late this season from his turf toe injury) So who seizes the baton beginning this weekend? Whose performance gets the Falcons back on track after the loss in Laramie? Who wants to make a name for themselves at the end of their time at the Academy or the beginning of their career?
From the notes: UCONN has been very, very good against the run, and not very good against the pass. Let’s see if the Falcons can incorporate that into their game plan.
Air Force and UCONN. Saturday at 1 on 740 KVOR.
